Of the 9 postfoscarnet isolates, 8 were foscarnet-resistant and Acyclovir / Aciclovir-susceptible, 1 was resistant to both drugs. In this study of clinical HSV isolates, DNA pol mutations conferring foscarnet resistance were not associated with decreased Acyclovir / Aciclovir or cidofovir susceptibility. Acyclovir / Aciclovir- or foscarnet-resistant isolates retained susceptibility to cidofovir. When including antiretroviral therapy, the protective effect of Acyclovir / Aciclovir decreased to 9.0% and that of antiretroviral therapy was 43.0% for monotherapy and 36.0% for double therapy, suggesting that most of the protective effect of Acyclovir / Aciclovir in the previous model was due to antiretroviral therapy. In conclusion, treatment with Acyclovir / Aciclovir does not seem to prolong significantly survival to AIDS among HIV-positive individuals who are HSV-2-infected..
